Race held at Athletics Association to raise awareness about spina bifida

A tribute to Al-Wazzan who battled spina bifida since birth

KUWAIT: A race was organized on Saturday aimed at raising awareness and challenging the prevailing narratives about spina bifida at the Kuwait Athletics Association in Kaifan. The race served as a tribute to Abdulrahman Al-Wazzan, who battled spina bifida, where children ages from 4 to 12 were invited to join in a race to promote inclusivity between all kids no matter what obstacles some face.

Speaking to Kuwait Times, Jude Hayat, who lost her beloved son Abdulrahman to spina bifida, is dedicated to raising awareness about the impact of the condition on families. “Spina bifida did not define Abdulrahman; it was a part of him since birth,” she said. Hayat, along with her husband, felt a calling to organize the race and raise funds for wheelchairs and walkers for children of Gaza, as Abdulrahman had used them.

The event, organized close to his birthday, holds special significance to Hayat. She believes this event is a start and aims to make it an annual initiative, hoping for happiness, peace and love for the children of the world. “The event successfully sold 500 tickets for children, parents and guardians to participate in a race.

This not only raises awareness about spina bifida, but also contributes to providing essential equipment for kids in Gaza. I was motivated by the memory of my son and aspire to continue this initiative annually to make a positive impact on other families facing similar challenges,” she pointed out.

In honoring Abdurahman’s legacy, the community comes together, supporting a cause that transcends borders and disabilities. It’s a poignant reminder that through collective efforts, people can bring about positive change and provide much-needed resources for those in need.

Parents flocked to the racetrack with their children, where hundreds of children collected their numbers and started to warm up. The race started from the youngest age category to the oldest. After the race, children had the opportunity to participate in competitions where they won prizes offered by sponsors from Kitco, Kuwait Saudi Pharmaceutical Industries Company, Aqua Gulf, RUN, Bibi Hayat, LEND, Lily of the Valley and Work Shop.

All proceeds from the ticket sales were dedicated to the Kuwait Red Crescent Society to help the children of Gaza. This philanthropic effort showcased a beautiful cycle of support, from children participating in the race to those receiving assistance, embodying the spirit of compassion and solidarity across borders.
