KUWAIT: Even in mid-January, Kuwait finds itself still awaiting the arrival of proper winter chill. Surprisingly, the weather remains rainless, with a departure from typical winter conditions. The absence of expected cold temperatures and precipitation has raise eyebrows among residents accustomed to a more traditional winter experience.

Speaking to Kuwait Times, Astronomer Adel Al-Saadoun highlighted the influence of global warming on the delay of winter in Kuwait, altering the traditional onset and conclusion of seasons. He explained that during periods of cold weather, Europe usually experiences high pressure, redirecting cold air to other areas.

But even Europe has witnessed higher temperatures than usual and hasn’t seen the cold they used to have. His insight sheds light on the interconnectedness of global climate patterns and their impact on local weather phenomena, emphasizing the dynamic nature of our planet’s climate system in the face of environmental changes.

Saadoun pointed out that while Kuwait is expected to undergo some weather changes, the temperatures are not anticipated to drop to subzero levels in certain areas, as was previously experienced. “In the coming days, a slight cooling trend is forecast, though the decrease in temperature will be modest.

The overall climate is projected to maintain spring-like temperatures, signaling a deviation from the more pronounced winter chill of the past. This shift in seasonal patterns reflects the ongoing impact of climate variations on the weather dynamics in Kuwait, pointing towards a prolonged spring before the onset of the summer season,” he said.

The delayed arrival of the winter season, according to Saadoun, is intricately linked to the surge in temperatures observed in June and July, marked by record-breaking figures not witnessed in the past 150 years. Alarming as it may be, he disclosed 2024 is projected to witness even higher temperatures during the summer in Kuwait.
