Boasting high-rise walls and towers, Al-Zubarah Fortress in Qatar bears witness to this Gulf country’s ancient history and august heritage. The archaeological site was established in 1938 by Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al-Thani to protect Qatar’s western coast, and was used as a coast guard station until mid-1980s.

It has then transferred into a museum where visitors can explore artefacts from the pearl diving era. Adjacent to the walled coastal town of Al Zubarah, the fortress was renowned for trading and pear-diving in the northwest of Qatar.—KUNA
