MAKKAH: The ninth conference of Ministers of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs in the Islamic world kicked off in Makkah on Sunday. The summit was organized by the Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs with the participation of the Kuwait Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs. The Saudi Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Abdul Latif Al-Sheikh, said in an opening speech that Saudi Arabia “is based on the approach of moderation, care for the Islamic principles and values, preservation, and sincere advocacy.”

The conference will discuss ways to counter extremism and terrorism as well as ways to promote values of coexistence, tolerance, consolidating the principles of moderation, and strengthening citizenship in the countries of the Islamic world. Minister Al-Sheikh praised the kind patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman Bin Abdulaziz, stressing the Kingdom’s firm approach in promoting peace and religious tolerance.

He stressed the need for cooperation, consultation, activating joint programs, exchanging successful experiences, activating the role of imams and preachers, and enhancing the role of endowment funds in order to achieve growth and sustainability. The conference was attended by ministers of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, muftis, and heads of Islamic councils and associations from more than 60 countries. The Kuwaiti delegation is headed by the undersecretary of the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, Dr Bader Al-Mutairi.

The conference “The role of the ministries of Islamic Affairs and Endowments in promoting the principles of moderation and consolidating the values of moderation” will discuss topics related to the role of the ministries of Islamic Affairs and endowments. The Undersecretary of the Kuwaiti Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, Dr Bader Al-Mutairi, said on Sunday that the conference will also discuss a number of working papers submitted by Kuwait, including those related to the concept of renewing religious discourse. — KUNA
